Today, Ireland is most likely to be presented as some socially progressive and prosperous Atlantic idyll located off the coast of Europe. It’s a view widely shared and promoted by Dublin’s liberal commentariat.

As such, the view appears to be that Ireland has been transformed from a socially conservative backwater into a modern progressive utopia. This is a country that, in the space of one generation, has swopped nationalism for globalism, Catholicism for consumerism and conservatism for liberalism.
